Salary:                                    $28,000/year minimum

Starting date:                          Immediately

Closing date:                           Open until filled.   Screening to begin May 5, 2008

 

SUMMARY

 Provides academic advisement to students within the College, district-wide.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1.   Provides academic advisement to students with declared majors within the assigned division district wide

2.   Conducts process of advisement which includes: an interview, intake, assessment of academic and career goals, selection of a major, College entrance tests (TSI) requirements and admission criteria, financial aid resources, report of assessment of basics skills.

3.   Conducts process of advisement which further includes: selection of courses, degree planning information on transferring STC credits to other colleges, and assistance with academic issues such as study skills, test taking, academic probation or academic suspension

4.   Acts as liaison with faculty and staff within the assigned division, department and program to ensure student successes in the completion of their chosen course of study

5.   Familiarity with STC policy in regards to academic standards.  Reviews student records and meets with "at risk" student to provide services concerning academic probation or academic suspension

6.   Be visible and available to needs of students within assigned division/area.  Regularly coordinate appointments with advisor and faculty (3 contacts per student per semester)

7.   Presentations performed in classrooms, schedule activities and maintain regular office hours

8.   Assist with advisement training for division faculty and staff district wide

9.   Assist advisement and registration process at peak times at the Advising Center

10. Coordinate with department to develop and maintain brochures, handouts, and transfer guides to provide accurate information to students

11. Create and maintain student academic degree plan files

12. Submit weekly reports to Dean of Counseling and Advising

13. Attend departmental and divisional staff meetings

14. Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in psychology, social behavioral science or related field

Two years experience in counseling, educational or social agency setting

Excellent testing and advising skills are essential

Knowledge of specific needs for Special Populations is desirable

Bilingual, English-Spanish, preferred

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, customers or employees of organization.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
